What is lifestyle by design, and why does it feel like somebody finally said out loud the thing you’ve been thinking for years? That’s the question this post answers, from the origin of the concept all the way to the practical, unglamorous, genuinely exciting work of building something that gives you your life back.

If you’ve ever sat in a Monday morning Teams meeting, watching the minutes tick by while your real life waits somewhere else, you’ve already felt the gap that lifestyle by design tries to close.

You don’t need a guru to tell you something is off. You know.

This post is for you if you’ve been circling the idea of building a print on demand shop on Etsy and wondering if it can actually be a vehicle for a different kind of life. The short answer is yes.

So, what is lifestyle by design, exactly?

Lifestyle by design is the intentional act of shaping your life around your own values, your own priorities, and your own definition of a good life, instead of defaulting to the path your parents expected, your employer rewarded, or society quietly assumed you would follow.

It sounds simple. It is, in concept. But living it is a completely different thing, because most of us were raised on a very specific story: go to school, get a job, work hard for forty years, and then, finally, in your sixties, you get to enjoy yourself.

That’s the deferred life plan. And lifestyle design says, politely but firmly: absolutely not.

Lifestyle design is the refusal to postpone your actual life until some future date that may never come.

It’s not about quitting everything and hoping for the best. It’s about getting clear on what you actually want, and then building your income, your routines, and your daily structure around that vision, right now, not in twenty years.

Where the idea came from

The term was popularized by Tim Ferriss in his 2007 book “The 4-Hour Workweek.” That book spent four years on the New York Times Bestseller List, got translated into 40 languages, and sold over 2.1 million copies.

Whether you’ve read it or just heard it referenced in every entrepreneurship podcast ever, its core argument changed how a lot of people think about work and time.

Ferriss introduced the concept of what he called the “New Rich,” which had nothing to do with your net worth.

The New Rich were people who prioritized time, freedom, and mobility over salary, titles, and conventional markers of success.

He wrote that book before “digital nomad” was even a phrase people used, which makes it feel a little eerie in retrospect, like he described a world that would take another decade to actually exist at scale.

He also introduced the idea of mini-retirements. Instead of deferring all rest and adventure to your post-career years, you take extended breaks throughout your life, while you’re still young enough to make the most of them.

A few months in Portugal. A summer in Mexico. A season in Southeast Asia. Not a vacation. A chapter.

What lifestyle design actually involves, day to day

Here’s where it gets real. Because lifestyle design isn’t a vision board exercise. It requires you to do some honest, sometimes uncomfortable inventory of your actual life.

This is exactly what I did after I began working at a big law firm right after law school. I took stock of my life, and really figured out what I wanted and did not want. I did not want to do that work for the next 40 years of my life.

Instead, I figured out a way to retire at 42, move to Portugal and live a freedom-first lifestyle.

How can you do the same? Here is the first and most important step:

Get clear on your values

You cannot design a life you love without knowing what you actually love and want. It is truly that simple. Most people have never stopped to seriously answer the question: what does freedom feel like to me, specifically?

Is it slow mornings without an alarm? The ability to be there when your kids get home from school? Three months in France every year? Working from a hammock in Tulum? All of the above?

The answers are different for everyone, and that’s the point. Lifestyle design isn’t a template. It’s a process of self-inquiry that most of us were never taught to do, because the traditional path didn’t require it. You just followed the script.

The moment you start asking what you actually want, instead of what you’re supposed to want, everything shifts.

The three types of freedom most lifestyle designers are chasing

Tim Ferriss broke freedom down in a way that’s genuinely useful.

Time freedom is control over how you spend your hours and days.

Location freedom is the ability to work and live from anywhere without being tethered to a specific desk, city, or zip code.

Financial freedom is having enough income from flexible or passive sources that you’re not dependent on a single employer to survive.

Most people start with financial freedom as the goal, but Ferriss argued, and I’d agree, that time freedom is the one that changes your daily experience the most. You can have money and still feel trapped. Time is the thing you can’t buy back.

The Pareto principle and cut what doesn’t serve you

One of the frameworks lifestyle designers love is the 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto principle. The idea is that 20 percent of your actions produce 80 percent of your results, which means a huge chunk of what you’re doing every day is producing almost nothing of real value.

Lifestyle design is partly the discipline of identifying and eliminating that bottom 80 percent to create more space for the things that actually matter.

This applies to your business, your schedule, and your commitments. It’s not about doing less out of laziness. It’s about doing less so that the things you keep are actually worth doing.

Who is lifestyle design actually for?

The honest answer is that it’s for anyone who has looked around at their life and thought “is this really it?” But there are some groups who seem to find this concept and feel like someone finally put words to the thing they’ve been quietly processing for years.

Women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s who are reevaluating what they want from their careers, their relationships, and their daily lives are a big part of this conversation right now.

Post-pandemic, a lot of people who had always been vaguely dissatisfied with the grind finally had a reason to say it out loud. The pandemic was a reset for millions of people, and many of them came out of it unwilling to go back to exactly the way things were.

Corporate professionals who are burned out but scared to leave are another group. They have the salary, maybe the title, maybe even the respect of their peers, and still feel hollowed out by Sunday night.

The whole point of building for yourself is that it should eventually work for you, not the other way around.

And then there are the travelers. The people who want to spend a month in Lisbon and a season in the south of France, not as a special occasion, but as a way of life. Lifestyle design and slow travel are deeply intertwined, because both reject the idea that two weeks of vacation a year is enough.

Lifestyle design in 2025 and 2026

The concept has had a serious resurgence since 2020. Remote work was normalized almost overnight, and millions of people discovered that the commute, the open office, and the nine-to-five schedule were not actually requirements for getting work done. They were just habits. Old ones.

The slow travel movement picked up significantly. Living in a city for six weeks, cooking in a rented apartment, learning the neighborhood, is a different experience from a five-day trip with a packed itinerary. People are choosing the slower version more deliberately now.

The FIRE movement, which stands for Financial Independence Retire Early, overlaps heavily with lifestyle design principles.

Both are built on the idea that you don’t have to wait until you’re 65 to have your time back.

FIRE is more financially focused, but the underlying motivation is the same: I want my life to be mine.

Digital products, print on demand, online courses, and affiliate-based businesses have all grown significantly as people search for income streams that are location-independent and scalable without proportional time investment.

I did the same. I wanted to move my family to Portugal and wanted a portable income stream. In October 2022, I started an Etsy print on demand shop.

It’s location-independent by nature

You don’t need a warehouse. You don’t need to be in any specific city or country. Your designs can live in the cloud, your products are printed and shipped by your POD partner like Printify, and your Etsy shop operates whether you’re in your living room or a cafe in Porto.

It earns without constant attention

Once your listings are live and optimized, they can generate sales while you’re doing literally anything else.

This is what people mean when they say passive income, although “semi-passive” is more accurate because you do have to invest time upfront and stay on top of your shop over time. But the ratio of time to income is genuinely different from a job where you have to show up every hour to get paid.

That ratio is what makes it a lifestyle design vehicle. You’re trading setup time for ongoing freedom, which is a trade most people who have done the math are happy to make.

It’s scalable without a proportional time increase

Once you have consistent sales and a system, you can easily scale your shop by hiring a VA and using the right software. It can all be done virtually. Once you have the systems in place, your time frees up and you shop can still grow.

It’s flexible enough to fit around your actual life

You can build your Etsy shop during nap time, on weekends, in the evenings after your day job, or during the two hours after school drop-off. You can take a week off and your shop keeps running.

You can scale up when you have more bandwidth and slow down when life is complicated. That flexibility is rare, and it’s worth a lot.

How to actually start designing your life (a practical breakdown)

This is the part people sometimes skip because it feels too soft, too abstract, too “journaling retreat” compared to the tactical stuff. But it’s actually the foundation. Without it, you’re just building another thing that eventually runs you.

Define what your ideal Tuesday looks like

Not a vacation day. A regular Tuesday. Where are you when you wake up? What time do you start work? What does work actually feel like? Who do you talk to during the day? What time do you close your laptop?

This is a deceptively useful exercise because it forces you to get specific instead of vague.

Most people describe their ideal life in vague terms: “more freedom,” “less stress,” “more travel.” But the moment you describe your ideal Tuesday in specific sensory detail, you start to see exactly what you’re working toward and what’s currently in the way.

Map the gap honestly

Where are you right now versus where you want to be? What’s the actual distance between your current Tuesday and your ideal one? Is it a money problem? A time problem? A courage problem? A clarity problem? Being honest about the specific gap tells you what to work on first.

For a lot of people reading this, the gap is income. They don’t have enough flexible income to make choices about their time. That’s where building an Etsy shop comes in as a concrete step, not a dream, but a plan.

Start smaller than you think you should

You don’t have to blow up your life to start designing it differently. You can take a two-week trip to test what it feels like to work remotely. You can open an Etsy shop while keeping your job, like I did.

You can build slowly, intentionally, and gather information about what actually works for you before making any irreversible decisions.

Lifestyle design is not a one-time decision you make in a dramatic moment. It is a hundred small decisions made consistently over time.

Reassess regularly because your life will change

What freedom looked like at 28 is probably not what it looks like at 42. What you needed when you were single is not what you need with kids.

Lifestyle design is a living process, not a plan you make once and laminate. Give yourself permission to change your mind about what you want as you grow into a different person.

The thing about lifestyle by design that I keep coming back to is how completely at odds it is with the way most of us were raised to think about time.

We were taught to earn our freedom in increments, to defer gratification, to be grateful for a two-week vacation and a good benefits package. And for a long time, most people did exactly that.

But the world changed. Remote work happened. The pandemic happened. Millions of people started asking different questions, and a lot of them are not going back to the old answers.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably already asking those questions. What do I actually want? What would my life look like if I built it on purpose? What would it take to get there? Those are the right questions. They’re the beginning of everything.

Ideogram: Ideogram is an AI design tool that generates high-quality graphics with exceptionally accurate text rendering, making it ideal for creating quote-based and typography-focused designs. I also use the prompt based editing for mockups, making it a wonderful alternative to Photoshop, which is expensive.

Midjourney: Midjourney is an AI image tool that blows my mind every time I use it. It takes some time to get the prompts down. Once you play with it, you will get better at creating images and art to include on your print on demand products.

E-Hunt: E-Hunt is fantastic for competitor research and some light keyword research. My favorite aspect of E-Hunt is the Chrome extension that allows you to see the sales amount for an individual item on Etsy. Check out this article to see an example.

eRank: eRank is an SEO data tool that also allows you to search the competition and will also give you key words for your Etsy listing. It is also a low cost tool that will help you find low competition and highly searched niches.

Printify: Printify is a print-on-demand (POD) service that allows individuals and businesses to create and sell custom-designed products without needing to manage inventory or handle fulfillment. I put my designs on products offered by Printify. When an item sells, Printify prints and ships to my customer.
