I’ve built a $260,000+ passive income Etsy shop with print on demand. Earning passive income on Etsy isn’t magic—it’s the result of consistent action, systems you actually stick to.
I design and sell apparel on Etsy without holding any inventory. Every item purchased is printed and shipped for me once my shop receives a sale.
Sounds great, right? But I need you to understand, passive doesn’t mean effort-free.
There’s a lot of work upfront as you build your shop. Don’t let You tube gurus mislead you into thinking it is so easy and will take no time at all.
Because building anything successful takes the right mindset, research, and execution.
And, building passive income on Etsy takes time.
In this post, I’m breaking down how I built my $260K+ (revenue) passive income Etsy shop, and I’m sharing the exact tools I trust and use today in my shop.

I’m only sharing the tools that I actually use!
For specific resources that can level up your journey even faster, keep these handy: check out my Top Tools for Etsy Sellers for my go-to solutions, and see real numbers in my August 2024 Etsy income report for proof that passive income Etsy dreams aren’t too big for you.
Let’s get you one step closer to your financial freedom, your way.
What Passive Income Actually Means on Etsy
So, let’s get real about “passive income Etsy”—because that phrase gets tossed around everywhere.
When people dream of extra income in their sleep, Etsy is a great place to make that a reality—but you must approach it with the right mindset.
Passive income doesn’t mean you’ll never put in any work.
It means you build systems once, then collect coins again and again, even while you’re busy taking care of your family or soaking up sun in Portugal (like me).
What Sets Passive Income Etsy Apart from Traditional Side Hustles
Think about most side hustles. Uber? You drive, you earn. Dog walking? You show up, you get paid.
But with Etsy—especially with print on demand—you create a new design once, upload them, set your product listings, and potential customers can buy them any time.
No packing up boxes at midnight. No running to the post office in your lunch breaks. Once your shop is set up, you’re earning from work you did weeks or months ago.
Here’s why building passive income on Etsy stands out:
- Low start-up cost: You don’t need to blow your savings to start your Etsy store. No inventory, no shipping. You will have to pay for the Etsy fee to open a shop. You will also have to pay for the cost of an item if someone purchases from you. Then, Etsy sends that money to your bank account.
- Flexible schedule: Create listings after work, or while kids nap—you call the shots. While you will want to put in a lot of work up front, you can do that on your own schedule. You don’t have to clock in, and actually show up to a place at a certain time. Once you begin to see traction and sales in your shop, you are one step closer to a business that is aligned to your lifestyle.
- No physical product headaches: When you sell print on demand, your print provider prints and ships your item to your customer. You do not have to hold any inventory. You don’t have to do any “labor.” It is just you clicking away on your laptop. I use Printify to print and ship the items in my shop that sell because they are truly the best print provider out there. More on that below.
- Scalability: One listing can sell a hundred times, or a thousand, with no additional work. Also, once you sell something, you can make similar designs and products that will also sell, making it easy to scale because now you know exactly what your customers want. This is exactly how you scale your shop! Etsy also recommends the same in its Seller Handbook.
How to Start Building A Passive Income Etsy Shop
Starting a successful Etsy shop isn’t about luck—it’s about knowing the best thing to sell, setting up clear systems, and building passive income streams you can count on.
Step 1: Product Validation and Etsy SEO
Before you start dreaming about waking up to passive income Etsy sales, you need a system that guarantees you’re not wasting precious hours—or motivation—on products no one wants.
DO NOT just sell what you think or hope might sell. This is very important. Use real data from the beginning.
Validating products and having great Etsy SEO will help you gain traction from the beginning!
I did not do this in the beginning and it cost me time and money. Let’s break down how you can do it.
Use eRank to Find Low-Competition and Searched Keywords
I could not have built my passive income Etsy shop to multiple six figures without eRank. It will do the same for you with the right strategy.
Here’s how I use eRank step-by-step:
- Keyword Discovery: I use ChatGPT to help me brainstorm keywords in different niches. I think take that list and head over to eRank’s Bulk Keyword feature and copy all of the keywords. eRank will provide you with a ton of data on those words. The most important data is the “Etsy Competition” and the “Average Searches.”
- Filter Low-Competition, Searched Phrases: Click around on the keywords until you find ones that have low Etsy Competition (anything in green) and a good Average Search volume (anything above 100). eRank is such a wealth of data. For any word that you click on, it will provide you with another list of related keywords. I’ve found gold, just by spending time giving into my curiosity and clicking on different words to see what comes up! The keywords that you find will be the basis for the title and tags you input into your listing. Boom! You have great Etsy SEO that make you more likely to get found.
- Validate Demand on Etsy: Once you have found a good keyword, type that into the Etsy search bar. You want to validate demand by making sure people are actually searching for and BUYING products with that keyword. The easiest way to do that is to click on the first few products with that keyword and look for the “In [X] carts” indicator. That is social proof that people are liking, and buying those items. If the item has a “Bestseller” badge, even better.
- Start Designing Products: I save keyword lists inside eRank so every new design starts with research, not guesswork. Now, take those keywords and start designing items that are unique but familiar to those that are selling. Do not copy designs. You will never build a successful shop that way.
Here is my in-depth review of eRank if you want more information and are wondering if it is worth it. Spoiler, it is.
Save Time and Spy on Competition with EHunt
I use a great free tool called EHunt to spy on competition and validate demand.
It saves me a ton of time when I’m researching.

My favorite aspect of EHunt is the Chrome extension that allows you to see a store’s sales of a specific item on the Etsy website.
It is such a time saver, and it is free!
A lot of my research is done on Etsy, and to be able to actually see how many sales an item has while you are on the Etsy website is such a hack!
Here is an example:

It’s like having a cheat code that shows you what products are selling, saving you so much time in your research.
The only downside is this chrome extension only works on your desktop/laptop.
Using tools like EHunt means I don’t waste a lot of time or extra work creating the wrong types of products. Instead of guessing and hoping, I work with their data to know what’s moving right now in the Etsy marketplace.
This is the smart way to build passive income on Etsy
If you want more information on EHunt and how it works, check out my in-depth review here.
eRank and EHunt were key players in how I built a $200K+ passive income Etsy shop. You need these tools in your tool box.
Step 2: Designing Products Without Burning Out
If you’ve ever stared at a blank Canva screen sweating over the next “must-have” design for your Etsy store, welcome to the club.
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a graphic designer or work all hours of the night.
Creating Designs With Canva Pro and AI (Midjourney, Ideogram, and ChatGPT)
Let’s be real, the thought of designing used to keep me up at night. Then I discovered the power of batching.
Instead of cranking out one design at a time, I block out an afternoon, turn on some music, and create a bunch of designs in one go.
This batching system keeps my creative energy flowing, speeds up my workflow, and frees up more hours to spend with my family—or, let’s be honest, plotting my next luxury trip.
Here’s how to work smarter, not harder, with Canva Pro ($12.99 a month):
- Batch your design sessions: Create 5 or more designs or drafts of designs in one go. You can then use AI to expand, perfect, or create similar designs! More on that in the next section.
- Use Canva templates: Use with Canva’s pro templates, then put your own spin on them for new products. It’s the best way to help you sharpen your design skills while already starting with a template that complete and aesthetic.
- Brand once, reap the rewards: Save your color palettes and fonts in Canva Pro. This will save you time as you design.
You don’t need to stress about not being a “real” designer. You just need digital tools and a batching strategy that multiplies your passive income build out.
AI Tools for Design Creation and Inspiration
Listen, every business owner hits creative roadblocks—especially when juggling an Etsy side hustle with regular life. That’s where AI tools turn into your secret weapon for passive income Etsy gold.
I use MidJourney (starting at $10/month) and ChatGPT (free, but starting at $20/month for image generation) as my personal designing squad. No need to stare down a blank screen when you can get new ideas and start from smart prompts.
I also use Ideogram for both AI designs and mockup generation. You can easily use it’s prompt based editing to change photos and create stunning mockups for your shop. Ideogram also has the best text rendering for designs and will make beautiful designs if you simply tell it what style you want!
Here’s my workflow for making the most out of AI design tools:
- Fresh ideas on demand: With ChatGPT, you can spitball endless design ideas. Just type in this prompt: “I’m an Etsy print-on-demand seller and I want to brainstorm new design ideas. My niche is: [insert your niche here — e.g., dog lovers, hiking, self-care, boho home decor, etc.] My ideal customer is: [describe them briefly — e.g., young moms, spiritual Gen Z women, outdoorsy dads, etc.] Can you help me brainstorm 10 fresh product ideas that align with this vibe and will appeal to buyers on Etsy?“
- Stunning graphics, less effort: Feed your prompts into MidJourney and watch it whip up beautiful images and designs. For example, use this prompt: “Retro minimalist graphic illustration for hiking lovers — clean lines, soft muted earth tones, centered mountain scene, white background, poster style, vector art.” Then, download the best images and upload into Canva. Polish them in Canva for your finished product. The great thing about Midjourney is that you can learn from others on the platform. When you log in, you have a library of images available to you on the Explore tab. You can hover over the “T” on any image and see the exact prompt used to create that image. It makes it so easy to learn how to use the tool. AI helps you keep your styles consistent with the right prompting, which can help the aesthetic look of your Etsy shop as a whole.
- Product Mockups: Once you have your designs perfected, then you need to create great product mockups. I used to purchase all of my mockups on Etsy. There are great mockup shops that sell stylized images of the blank products that I sell. I then use Canva to place my design on the image and then use that as the listing images in my shop. Now, I create product mockups using Ideogram or Google Gemini’s Nano Banana.
Your goal is extra income and more financial freedom, not more screen time. AI tools are the shortcut you’ve been looking for. Just remember: these tools should support your creativity, not replace it.
For proof that this system works (and keeps earning, even when you take that family vacation), check out my Etsy Print On Demand Income Report October 2025, it’s real numbers, real sales, and real examples of how this workflow brings passive income to life.
Next, is the truly passive part because you are not printing and shipping out any of this inventory! Keep reading to learn about my obsession with Printify, my print provider.
Step 3: Automating Fulfillment with Printify
Printify is a print-on-demand platform that lets you create and sell custom products like t-shirts, mugs, and hoodies without holding inventory.
When someone buys from your Etsy shop, Printify automatically prints and ships the order for you!

Why Printify is the Go-To POD Partner
I truly could not have scaled to a $200,000+ passive income Etsy shop without using Printify.
Printify does one thing beautifully—it connects your Etsy store with a global network of print providers who handle everything from printing to doorstep delivery.
Connecting Printify to Etsy is so easy:
- Sign up for a free Printify account.
- Link Printify to your Etsy shop in minutes just by pressing Etsy and logging in.
- Start creating product listings directly from Printify.

There are several key reasons why Printify is the best choice for an Etsy shop. First, they have an incredible catalog of products. You are virtually unlimited in the types of products that you can sell.
Second, in addition to their catalog of products, they have a catalog of other print providers under the Printify umbrella.
You can choose the provider with the best rating and the best variety of products. And, if your print provider is out of stock of an item, chances are, another provider has that item in stock.
Third, Printify’s customer service is truly unmatched. They helped me when items are lost in the mail, or easily send out replacements if an item arrives damaged (which doesn’t happen a lot).
Fourth, once you hit $50,000 in costs generated through Printify, you are assigned a Success Manager that works with you to help you scale your store and gives you access to exclusive products and discounts.
Fifth, Printify is free! There is absolutely no cost to sign up and connect your Etsy shop. Printify has a premium paid tier, that provides discounts on products, but it is not required to set up and run your shop.
For me, there is no other print provider that can help you build your passive income Etsy shop than Printify.

The Best SEO and Design Tools for an Etsy Shop:
These are the only tools I use for my shop!
Canva: Canva is the most amazing tool. It is user friendly, and always improving! The tools that Canva has have evolved so much since I first started using it in 2022 for the better. I use it almost everyday. I use it to create designs, to edit AI designs, and to create product mockups.
Ideogram: Ideogram is an AI design tool that generates high-quality graphics with exceptionally accurate text rendering, making it ideal for creating quote-based and typography-focused designs. I also use the prompt based editing for mockups, making it a wonderful alternative to Photoshop, which is expensive.
Midjourney: Midjourney is an AI image tool that blows my mind every time I use it. It takes some time to get the prompts down. Once you play with it, you will get better at creating images and art to include on your print on demand products.
E-Hunt: E-Hunt is fantastic for competitor research and some light keyword research. My favorite aspect of E-Hunt is the Chrome extension that allows you to see the sales amount for an individual item on Etsy. Check out this article to see an example.
eRank: eRank is an SEO data tool that also allows you to search the competition and will also give you key words for your Etsy listing. It is also a low cost tool that will help you find low competition and highly searched niches.
Printify: Printify is a print-on-demand (POD) service that allows individuals and businesses to create and sell custom-designed products without needing to manage inventory or handle fulfillment. I put my designs on products offered by Printify. When an item sells, Printify prints and ships to my customer.
