For New Year’s Eve in Lisbon, I would choose between three very different plans: the big celebration around Praça do Comércio, a nighttime cruise on the Tagus, or a hotel evening that makes dinner and getting home simple.
If you have young children, a lovely daytime outing can be your celebration instead.
I live in Lisbon with my family, and our New Year’s plans tend to fit around the children rather than revolve around staying out until morning.
But the experience I most want to book is a river cruise, watching the city’s celebration from the water instead of standing in the biggest crowd.
Here is how I would plan December 31 into January 1.
In a Rush? Where to Stay in Lisbon
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Family space: Martinhal Lisbon Oriente. A quieter waterfront base with family accommodations.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Central apartment-style stay: Altis Suites. Space near Avenida da Liberdade and Príncipe Real.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Special-occasion luxury: Corinthia Lisbon. A hotel-focused stay, with transport needed for central celebrations.
These are hotels I have stayed at. Festive event packages and ordinary room rates can have different inclusions.
Choose Your Kind of New Year’s Eve in Lisbon
Before choosing a ticket, decide what you want midnight to feel like. Some people want to be right in the middle of the crowd, while others want a seat, a smaller group, or the option to be back with their children earlier.
That choice determines where to stay, when to eat, and how much traveling around the city makes sense.
| Your Ideal Evening | A Good Starting Point | Important Detail |
|---|---|---|
| A large city celebration | Praça do Comércio and the official Lisbon announcements | The 2026/27 lineup and access arrangements still need confirmation |
| Midnight on the river | Tagus New Year’s Eve cruise | Drinks are included, but dinner is not |
| A smaller sailing group | New Year’s Eve sailboat experience | Limited group size, boarding requirements, and nonrefundable terms |
| A family hotel celebration | Martinhal Lisbon Oriente | Festive package inclusions differ from ordinary room rates |
| A dressed-up gala evening | Corinthia Lisbon | Confirm the gala package and any separate childcare |
| A quieter family day | An indoor experience, a relaxed meal, and a city walk | Confirm December 31 hours rather than assuming normal service |
The best New Year’s plan is the one that still sounds enjoyable when you think about the journey home.
Praça do Comércio: Lisbon’s Big New Year Celebration
Praça do Comércio is the place to watch for the city’s main New Year’s program. The enormous waterfront square gives the evening a very different atmosphere from a restaurant party or a neighborhood gathering.
I saw the concert preparations during our daytime visit on December 31, 2025. Even before the evening began, the stage and the huge waterfront setting gave us a sense of how much the city was getting ready to celebrate.
How to Plan
The municipality’s report on welcoming the New Year is the place to start.
Use the Lisbon municipality’s news service to check for announcements as the date approaches. Do not plan around a previous year’s concert schedule, fireworks duration, or security arrangement because plans are subject to change.
The useful decision you can make now is whether a large public gathering suits your group. If it does, choose accommodation and dinner with the return journey in mind; if it does not, look at the river or hotel options before their preferred dates fill.
How I Would Plan for the Square
Eat beforehand and keep the evening practical. I would plan for comfortable shoes, warm layers, a charged phone, and a clear meeting point.
With children, I would think carefully about the noise, standing time, and getting back through the crowd. A daytime visit to see the city dressed for the season can be a wonderful alternative to making midnight the goal.
If you decide to go, check the official access instructions shortly before leaving. Bag rules, street closures, and transport changes are the kinds of details that need current guidance rather than a generic packing list.
Watch the Celebration From a New Year’s Eve Cruise

A nighttime Tagus cruise is the option I am most drawn to for a grown-up celebration. Being on the river gives you a completely different setting from the square, with the city around you rather than a crowd on every side.
That is the kind of evening I would love to book next. Compare the boats carefully, because a drinks cruise, a sailboat outing, and a dinner cruise are not the same experience.
A Two-Hour Tagus Cruise With Midnight Drinks
The New Year’s Eve on the Tagus River cruise is listed as a two-hour sailing beginning at 11 p.m. Its drinks offering includes options such as wine, beer, and sangria, with sparkling wine and raisins for midnight.
Dinner is not included. Plan a proper meal beforehand instead of assuming that an evening sailing will feed you; the listing describes snacks available to buy at check-in.
The meeting point is Doca de Alcântara Norte, Gate 3, also called the Spanish Dock, with Blue Skipper check-in. Follow the exact voucher instructions and arrive with enough time to locate the gate rather than using a general waterfront address.
This booking has nonrefundable terms, so read the weather and cancellation conditions before paying. The experience is not wheelchair accessible, and I would contact the operator directly with any boarding or mobility questions.
A Smaller New Year’s Eve Sailboat Experience
If you prefer a smaller group, the New Year’s Eve sailboat with fireworks experience is listed for a maximum of 12 travelers. The two-hour outing includes snacks and drinks rather than a full gala meal.
Its meeting instructions identify the operator’s Alcântara location at Galerias Edifício Gonçalves Zarco. Use the confirmation to find the correct office and boarding arrangements, because boats operating from nearby docks can have different check-in points.
This is also a nonrefundable option, with restrictions relating to wheelchair or walker access and bringing outside food or drinks. A smaller boat can be appealing, but it is worth asking about shelter, seating, toilets, and suitability for your group before booking.
Book the actual experience you want, not just a ticket with “New Year’s Eve” in the name.
Questions to Ask Before You Pay
Confirm exactly what the price includes. Check the boarding time as well as the sailing time, the return dock, and whether children can join that specific departure.
Fireworks viewing depends on the city’s program, conditions on the river, and the operator’s route. Neither a product title nor a promotional photograph is a guarantee of a particular view or a municipal fireworks schedule.
Wear something that works outdoors, even if your evening starts with a dressy dinner. I would bring a wind-resistant layer and secure shoes, then choose the rest of the outfit around being comfortable on the boat.
A Family New Year’s Stay at Martinhal Lisbon Oriente
Martinhal Lisbon Oriente
Martinhal Lisbon Oriente is one of the hotels where I have stayed with my children, and the space is a major reason I recommend it. Having room to spread out matters when a trip includes downtime, early bedtimes, or simply getting everyone ready without feeling crowded.
I also know Terrace from our Christmas Eve dinner there. Having a special meal in the hotel where you are staying is a lovely way to enjoy the occasion without adding another journey to the evening.

The hotel’s published New Year’s offer covers the 2026/27 period and describes a six course gala dinner with live music and entertainment. If you have kids, you have access to complimentary kids club activities while you party the night away.
At midnight, you can watch the fireworks at the center of Lisbon from the rooftop with a glass of champagne!
There’s even a New Year’s Day Family Brunch where you can rest and recover.
For the wider stay, my Martinhal Lisbon Oriente review explains why the family accommodations work so well for us. Parque das Nações is a different base from central Baixa, so include transport in your plan if you want to spend midnight elsewhere.
A Glamorous Gala at Corinthia Lisbon
Corinthia Lisbon
Corinthia Lisbon is another hotel I have stayed at. I would consider it for a special-occasion stay when you want the hotel itself to be part of the evening rather than just somewhere to sleep afterward.
Its Walk of Stars New Year’s Eve offer is themed around Hollywood glamour for the 2026/27 celebration. The published program includes a gala dinner, live entertainment, a DJ, and a midnight supper, with shared tables forming part of the event arrangements.
If you are comparing the atmosphere with Martinhal, my Corinthia Lisbon hotel and spa review gives you more context. Choose the hotel that fits the whole trip, then confirm the celebration separately.
New Year’s Eve With Children: Make the Day the Occasion
There is no rule that the best part of December 31 has to happen at midnight. With young children, a good meal, an outing, and time together can be far more enjoyable than stretching everyone past the point of having fun.
I would choose one main daytime experience and leave the rest flexible. If the weather is kind, enjoy the decorated city; if it is wet, build the day around something indoors and keep the evening close to where you are staying.
An Indoor Baking Experience
The pastel de nata baking class with drinks is one option to check for an available daytime slot. It is a regular Portuguese baking class rather than a special New Year’s event, which can be exactly what you want if the aim is doing something enjoyable together.
The two-hour class is taught in English and excludes children under six. Check December 31 availability and any dietary requirements before promising it to the family.
A Relaxed Meal and a Walk
A good lunch can be the celebration. My Lisbon restaurants with a view includes places I return to for the food, setting, and family-friendly features, but you should contact the restaurant about holiday service before making plans.
Afterward, take a manageable walk rather than trying to cover the whole city.
Around Parque das Nações, the waterfront makes a very different afternoon from the busy streets of central Lisbon; around Baixa, you can enjoy the seasonal atmosphere without committing to staying for the evening crowd.

You can give the children a memorable New Year’s Eve without making them stay awake for the adult version.
Getting Around Lisbon on December 31
Choose dinner and your main event with geography in mind. A restaurant near your hotel, followed by one planned journey to a dock, is simpler than a sequence of cross-city transfers just as everyone else is heading out.
Check the Lisbon Metro service notices, Carris announcements, and, if traveling farther, CP timetables for the actual holiday period.
I would also avoid making a precisely timed taxi pickup outside the busiest celebration my only way home. Agree on a sensible pickup area away from the immediate crowd, keep enough battery to communicate, and know an alternative route back.
If you are staying outside the center, decide whether returning late is part of the plan you really want. My where to stay in Lisbon guide can help you compare a central base with a quieter waterfront stay before you book.
Portuguese New Year Traditions to Look For
Raisins and sparkling wine are details you may see in New Year’s packages. Eating twelve raisins with wishes for the year ahead is a familiar Portuguese tradition, and several river experiences build that midnight moment into their offerings.
You do not need an elaborate party to enjoy that sense of occasion. A toast, a good meal, and the people you want around you can be enough, whether you are celebrating in a hotel, on a boat, or back at your accommodation.
If your visit begins before New Year’s, combine the practical planning here with my Christmas in Lisbon guide and Christmas markets guide. Check each event’s end date rather than assuming the markets all continue into January.
What to Do on New Year’s Day
Keep January 1 lighter than a normal sightseeing day. A late breakfast, a waterfront walk, or a prebooked brunch makes more sense than an early start after a late celebration.
Confirm individual opening hours before heading to a museum, attraction, or restaurant. A venue being open during winter does not mean it follows its normal schedule on a public holiday.
If you have more time in the city, use my three-day Lisbon itinerary to place the bigger sightseeing days around the holiday. You can enjoy New Year’s without trying to fit your entire Lisbon wish list into December 31 and January 1.
Final Thoughts
New Year’s Eve in Lisbon can be a big public celebration, a beautiful evening on the river, or a much quieter family occasion. I would choose the version that fits your travel companions and then make the practical details easy.
For me, the river is the experience I would love to try next. For families, a hotel plan with clearly confirmed childcare or a special daytime outing can be just as memorable, without making midnight a requirement for a wonderful start to the year.
Portugal Travel Planning Guide
🚑 Should I buy travel insurance for Portugal?
It is strongly recommended. Non residents do not automatically receive free public healthcare, although private healthcare is available. Travel insurance covers emergencies, delays, and medical visits. If you require a Schengen visa, insurance is mandatory. Visitors Coverage is a highly trusted and recommended choice.
💳 Will my debit card or credit card work in Portugal, and do I need cash?
Most major credit and debit cards work in Portugal, including Visa, Mastercard, and many travel cards from US and UK banks. Some smaller cafés, markets, and rural spots still prefer cash, so carry a little on hand. For ATM withdrawals and currency exchange, use a Wise card. Wise usually provides better exchange rates than traditional banks and is widely accepted at Portuguese ATMs and anywhere debit and credit cards are accepted.
📲 Will my phone work in Portugal?
Many major carriers offer roaming plans, but costs vary. For affordable data, purchase a local SIM from Vodafone or MEO or use an eSIM like Airalo. Public wifi exists but is not always reliable, so a local data plan is ideal.
🚙💨 Is it safe to rent a car in Portugal?
Yes. Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore Portugal. Roads are well maintained. Expect toll highways and narrow streets in older villages. Automatic cars are limited, so book early. I recommend using Discover Cars to find the most reputable rental car company. Just filter for the company with the best reviews.
💧 Can you drink tap water in Portugal?
Yes. Tap water is safe throughout Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, and most populated regions. In remote rural areas water systems may vary, so check locally if you are unsure. Many visitors prefer a filtered bottle because the mineral taste can be stronger in some areas, though generally safe.
🏩 Best way to book accommodations in Portugal
I use Booking.com and Hotels.com for hotels. Mostly Hotels.com because I love a rewards program! For unforgettable, luxury stays, I highly recommend Plum Guide for your stay. VRBO also works incredibly well for luxury stays, especially for families.
✈️ Best site to search for flights to Portugal
Skyscanner and Google Flights provide reliable fare tracking for Lisbon, Porto, and Faro. Prices vary significantly by season, with summer being the highest.
🎫 Do I need a visa for Portugal?
US and UK passport holders can generally visit Portugal visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen Area. Requirements for longer stays depend on your nationality and circumstances.
