The best luxury hotels in Lisbon at Christmas do more than give you a beautiful room. The right one can put you close to the lights, solve Christmas Eve dinner before restaurants fill up, give your children space to recover between outings, or turn a rainy afternoon into spa time instead of a logistical mess.
I moved my family of four to Portugal in August 2024, and I have now spent two Christmas seasons living in Lisbon.
If you’re wondering where to stay, for the fullest Christmas experience, choose Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon. For walking to Rossio and the downtown lights, choose The One Palácio da Anunciada. Families who want apartment space, heated pools, and childcare should look closely at Martinhal Lisbon Oriente.
This guide compares each hotel by the Christmas trip it actually suits, including festive dining, access to markets, family comfort, indoor pools, spa facilities, and what you can still enjoy when much of Lisbon slows down on December 24 and 25.
In a Rush? Where to Stay in Lisbon
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon for the most complete festive program, Wonderland access, Christmas dining, and hotel-centered luxury.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ The One Palácio da Anunciada for a palace stay near Rossio, Avenida da Liberdade, and downtown Christmas lights.
⭐⭐⭐⭐Martinhal Lisbon Oriente for families who need apartments, kitchenettes, heated pools, play areas, and supervised childcare.
Which Lisbon Hotel Is Best at Christmas?
Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon is the strongest choice when you want the hotel itself to feel like part of Christmas.
Its festive program has included two Christmas Eve dining options, Christmas Day lunch, afternoon tea, pastry classes, hot chocolate, spa treatments, and holiday takeaway.
The One Palácio da Anunciada makes more sense if you expect to spend most evenings walking through Rossio, Praça da Figueira, Avenida da Liberdade, and Chiado.
Martinhal is the most complete family setup, Corinthia is the strongest spa escape, and Altis Suites gives you a central apartment and kitchen without paying for a full resort-style Christmas program.
The key is deciding how much of your holiday you want the hotel to carry. A festive hotel can solve meals and indoor entertainment. A central hotel reduces transportation. An apartment can save your sanity when children want cereal instead of another elaborate tasting menu.
| Hotel | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon | The fullest hotel-centered Christmas experience | 2026 festive events are still to be confirmed |
| The One Palácio da Anunciada | Walking to Rossio and downtown lights | Choose it for location and palace atmosphere |
| Corinthia Lisbon | Spa time and a rainy-day reset | Not a walk-out base for Rossio |
| Martinhal Lisbon Oriente | Families who need space, pools, and childcare | Farther from historic downtown |
| Altis Suites | A central apartment-style family stay | Spa access may cost extra |
How I Chose These Christmas Hotels
A general list of Lisbon’s most expensive hotels is not enough for this decision. Christmas changes the practical questions.
You need to know whether you can walk back from the lights, whether the hotel gives you a realistic meal option when restaurants close, whether children have room to decompress, and whether the property still feels worth its rate during a cooler and sometimes rainy week.
I combined my stays at four properties with current hotel and holiday-program research. Seasonal menus, prices, dates, and classes change each year, so check the current booking page before committing to one experience.
Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon: Best Full Christmas Experience
Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon is the hotel I would choose when Christmas programming matters as much as the room. The hotel currently says its 2026 events are still to be confirmed, but its previous festive program shows why it belongs at the top of this list.
In 2025, the celebrations ran from December 1 through January 6. Guests and local visitors could choose between Christmas Eve dinner at Varanda and a Michelin-starred dinner at CURA, followed by Christmas Day lunch in the ballroom.
The program extended beyond the big meals. Festive afternoon tea, Valrhona hot chocolate, a gingerbread-cookie class, an Art of Cocoa masterclass, seasonal cocktails, winter spa treatments, and takeaway Bolo-Rei and Bolo-Rainha gave travelers several ways to participate.
You do not necessarily need to stay at the Four Seasons to reserve its festive dining or seasonal experiences, but availability is limited and advance reservations matter.
The location works well for Wonderland Lisboa in Eduardo VII Park. Inside the hotel, there is an indoor pool, spa, sauna, steam room, health club, 24-hour room service, and connecting-room requests for families.
The tradeoff is price. This is the most expensive hotel in the group, so it makes sense when you will use the holiday dining, spa, pool, and on-property programming.
The One Palácio da Anunciada: Best for Rossio and the Christmas Lights
I stayed at The One Palácio da Anunciada without my children. It is the property I would choose when the priority is walking into the center of Lisbon’s Christmas activity.
The hotel sits near Restauradores, a few minutes from Rossio Square and Avenida da Liberdade. You can walk to the Rossio market, Praça da Figueira’s food stalls, the Avenida lights, Chiado, and Baixa without planning every outing around a car.
The restored palace has original ceilings, substantial common rooms, and 2,500 square meters of gardens.
The indoor experience pool at Despacio Spa, sauna, hammam, 24-hour room service, Condes de Ericeira restaurant, and O Jardim Wine Bar are valuable when you return cold or tired.
Families are not excluded. Deluxe Family rooms average about 35 square meters and can sleep two adults plus two children, while some larger categories may accommodate a third child.
I would choose The One for location and atmosphere, not because it currently advertises Lisbon’s biggest hotel Christmas program. Read my full review of The One Palácio da Anunciada.

Corinthia Lisbon: Best Spa and Rainy-Day Reset
I stayed at Corinthia Lisbon without my children, and this is the hotel I would pick when rest and indoor facilities matter more than stepping directly into the downtown lights.

That photograph is from Soul Garden Restaurant & Bar inside Corinthia. The restaurant combines Asian and Latin American flavors in shareable dishes, and the food was genuinely amazing when I ate there and so was the service.
It is an easy on-property choice when you want dinner without leaving the hotel, especially after spa time or a rainy day.
The spa is the reason. Its Water Therapy Circuit includes sensory showers, a dynamic pool, jacuzzi-style pool, sauna, steam room, cold plunge, ice fountain, and cooling walk. There is also an indoor heated swimming pool and a 24-hour gym.
Children under 16 may use the swimming pool with a competent adult, but they cannot use the Water Therapy Circuit, heat experiences, or gym.
Corinthia’s has seasonal dining, buffet options, live entertainment, gifts, and a winter spa retreat, although exact 2026 menus are not yet confirmed.
Corinthia works best when you want the hotel to carry a slow winter day. It is less compelling if your dream is to walk out of the lobby and immediately join the Rossio Christmas crowds.

Martinhal Lisbon Oriente: Best for Families
I stayed at Martinhal Lisbon Oriente with my children. If your family needs more than a connecting room and a children’s menu, this is the most complete family setup here.

The property has apartment-style studios and one- to three-bedroom layouts, many with kitchenettes or kitchens. There are two indoor pools, two outdoor pools, a children’s pool, spa, gym, restaurant, supervised kids club, and a large play space.
The Raposinhos Club currently serves children from six months through age eight and offers two complimentary supervised sessions per day, including an evening Pyjama Club. That can create an actual dinner window for parents.
The indoor pools are heated year-round. The tradeoff is geography: you are exchanging downtown atmosphere for apartment space, childcare, pools, and a calmer family routine.
For a longer Christmas stay with children, that exchange can be completely worth it. There are lots of Christmas day activities for the kids, including gift and Santa! The staff there makes your stay there truly special.
My detailed Martinhal Lisbon Oriente review covers our (non-Christmas) family stay.
Altis Suites: Best Central Apartment Stay
I stayed at Altis Suites with my children. This is the practical central choice when you want a separate bedroom, living and dining space, and a kitchenette without moving away from Avenida da Liberdade, the central spot for everything, including high-end shopping.

The property has 32 apartments. The Deluxe Family Apartment sleeps four, and the kitchen is useful when restaurant schedules change or your children decide the only acceptable meal is something familiar.
Guests can use the GSpa at the neighboring Altis Grand Hotel for an additional charge. It includes a heated indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, Turkish bath, gym, and treatment rooms, but do not assume access is included in every rate.
Altis Suites is a four-star aparthotel rather than a full festive resort. Choose it for space, location, a kitchen, and a more independent stay.
More Lisbon Hotels With Christmas Experiences
The hotels below have promoted dedicated festive meals or packages in recent Christmas seasons. Their exact menus, entertainment, and stay inclusions can change annually.
Lisbon Marriott Hotel
Lisbon Marriott Hotel is worth checking when you want Christmas meals and entertainment without leaving the property. Its festive programming has included a Christmas Eve buffet with live music, Christmas Day lunch, and hotel packages that combine an overnight stay with holiday dining.
MYRIAD by SANA Hotels
MYRIAD by SANA Hotels pairs a modern Parque das Nações setting with broad Tagus views. Its previous festive program included Christmas Eve dinner at River Lounge, making it an appealing alternative for travelers who want a quieter waterfront stay and a holiday meal on site.

EPIC SANA Marquês
EPIC SANA Marquês gives you a central base near Avenida da Liberdade with the convenience of a hotel-run Christmas celebration. Previous programming has included a Christmas Eve buffet with live music, which can remove the stress of finding an open restaurant on one of Lisbon’s hardest nights for spontaneous dining.
Two More Hotels for Downtown Christmas Walkability
Altis Avenida faces Rossio and has one of the most convenient locations for downtown markets and lights. Its 2025 program included Christmas Eve dining at Rossio Gastrobar, but 2026 details still need confirmation.
Avenida Palace is another traditional option beside Rossio. It lacks the pools, apartments, or verified holiday programming of the primary choices, but its location is hard to beat.
Christmas Cruises and Seasonal Experiences Near Your Hotel
A hotel can solve Christmas Eve dinner or put you close to the lights, but it does not have to contain your entire holiday. Seasonal cruises, lights tours, pastry workshops, concerts, and markets give you reasons to leave even the nicest suite.
Lisbon Christmas Sunset Cruise With Buffet and Open Bar
I personally took a smaller boat that offers a Lisbon Christmas Sunset Cruise with Buffet and Open Bar. The seasonal listing describes a three-hour cruise combining sunset on the Tagus with food and drinks.
Wait for the operator at the locked dock doors.
We went down toward the boats without the owner and were scolded and told it was private property and dangerous to be there unaccompanied. Do not enter the dock alone.
Seasonal pages can disappear or change when December inventory is not open. Confirm the departure point, date, inclusions, and meeting instructions before organizing your day around it.
Christmas River Cruise With Traditional Cake and Portuguese Liquor
A separate seasonal catamaran cruise has paired a two-hour Tagus trip with Portuguese Christmas cake and liquor. It is a useful alternative when you want a shorter trip with a specifically Portuguese holiday theme. Seasonal availability changes, so check again when December departures open.
Christmas Lights Tours, Pastry Classes, and Concerts
A private Christmas-lights tuk-tuk tour can work well when you want to see more of Lisbon’s decorated streets without climbing every hill in cold weather. The private format also makes it easier to enjoy the lights at your own pace instead of following a large group.
Hands On has offered workshops focused on traditional Portuguese Christmas sweets, and Four Seasons has offered gingerbread and chocolate classes. These schedules change, so confirm current dates directly before planning around a class.
Lisbon’s Christmas program typically includes concerts in churches and cultural venues. These may be published later than hotel packages, so use the official city program rather than an old calendar.
What Christmas in Lisbon Actually Looks Like
Christmas Eve is the main family celebration for many Portuguese households. The Consoada meal traditionally includes bacalhau or another fish, followed by Bolo-Rei and fried sweets such as sonhos, filhoses, coscorões, azevias, and rabanadas.
Some families exchange gifts after midnight, while others wait until Christmas morning. Missa do Galo, the traditional midnight Mass, remains part of the holiday for many people, although individual church schedules should be checked each year.
That rhythm affects visitors. Restaurants may close early or operate only with prepaid menus, transportation may change, and Christmas Day can feel very quiet away from major hotels and tourist areas.
How to Plan December 24 and 25 Without Getting Stuck
Reserve Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals as soon as menus open. If you choose a hotel with a confirmed festive program, you can solve the biggest planning problem before arrival.
At Martinhal or Altis Suites, use the kitchen as insurance. Breakfast food, snacks, drinks, and one easy meal can keep a quiet holiday from becoming stressful.
Check Lisbon Metro’s official holiday notice shortly before your trip. The system closed at 10:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve in 2024 but operated until 1:00 a.m. in 2025. Copying last year’s schedule can leave you stranded.
Confirm restaurant, museum, market, church, and tour hours separately. Some Christmas markets close before December 25, while Wonderland and hotel programs may continue into January.
Which Hotel Should Families Choose?
Choose Martinhal when supervised childcare, play space, kitchen, pools, and separate living areas will improve the trip. Choose Altis Suites when you want apartment practicality closer to Avenida da Liberdade.
The One works for families who want to walk downtown and can secure the right family room. Corinthia gives larger families indoor options, but its under-16 spa restrictions matter. Four Seasons is the celebratory choice when the budget supports its dining and programming.
Which Hotel Should Couples Choose?
The One is my choice for couples who want palace interiors, a spa, wine bar, and easy evening walks through central Lisbon. Corinthia is better for a spa-focused escape where downtime is the point.
Four Seasons is the splurge for a trip built around festive dining. Altis Avenida is the alternative when you want Rossio outside your door and plan to spend most of your time exploring.

Final Thoughts on the Best Luxury Hotels in Lisbon at Christmas
Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon is the strongest complete Christmas hotel. The One Palácio da Anunciada balances central walkability with a memorable luxury setting, while Martinhal Lisbon Oriente is the smartest family infrastructure choice.
Corinthia is the winter spa retreat, and Altis Suites is the practical apartment near Avenida da Liberdade. Choose according to the part of Christmas that matters most, then reserve the holiday meal or seasonal experience that would be hardest to replace.
Portugal Travel Planning Guide
🚑 Should I buy travel insurance for Portugal?
It is strongly recommended. Non residents do not automatically receive free public healthcare, although private healthcare is available. Travel insurance covers emergencies, delays, and medical visits. If you require a Schengen visa, insurance is mandatory. Visitors Coverage is a highly trusted and recommended choice.
💳 Will my debit card or credit card work in Portugal, and do I need cash?
Most major credit and debit cards work in Portugal, including Visa, Mastercard, and many travel cards from US and UK banks. Some smaller cafés, markets, and rural spots still prefer cash, so carry a little on hand. To avoid foreign transaction fees, cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve are excellent options. For ATM withdrawals and currency exchange, use a Wise card. Wise usually provides better exchange rates than traditional banks and is widely accepted at Portuguese ATMs and anywhere debit and credit cards are accepted.
📲 Will my phone work in Portugal?
Many major carriers offer roaming plans, but costs vary. For affordable data, purchase a local SIM from Vodafone or MEO or use an eSIM like Airalo. Public wifi exists but is not always reliable, so a local data plan is ideal.
🚙💨 Is it safe to rent a car in Portugal?
Yes. Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore Portugal. Roads are well maintained. Expect toll highways and narrow streets in older villages. Automatic cars are limited, so book early. I recommend using Discover Cars to find the most reputable rental car company. Just filter for the company with the best reviews.
💧 Can you drink tap water in Portugal?
Yes. Tap water is safe throughout Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, and most populated regions. In remote rural areas water systems may vary, so check locally if you are unsure. Many visitors prefer a filtered bottle because the mineral taste can be stronger in some areas, though generally safe.
🏩 Best way to book accommodations in Portugal
I use Booking.com and Hotels.com for hotels. Mostly Hotels.com because I love a rewards program! For unforgettable, luxury stays, I highly recommend Plum Guide for your stay. VRBO also works incredibly well for luxury stays, especially for families.
✈️ Best site to search for flights to Portugal
Skyscanner and Google Flights provide reliable fare tracking for Lisbon, Porto, and Faro. Prices vary significantly by season, with summer being the highest.
🎫 Do I need a visa for Portugal?
US, UK, and most EU passport holders do not need a visa for short tourist stays within the 90-day Schengen limit. Stays longer than 90 days require a visa arranged before arrival.
