Ericeira is the Portugal day trip I recommend when you want ocean views, excellent food, and a beautiful place that feels far more relaxed than Lisbon, even though it is only about 40 kilometers away.

I have visited Ericeira repeatedly with my family since moving to Portugal, in nearly every season except the peak of August.

We usually go for the same simple rhythm: a coastal playground, a long walk, time near the beach, an unforgettable meal at Costa Fria, and sunset beside the water.

If you want a day that feels easy, scenic, and enjoyable with or without children, Ericeira is worth visiting.

This guide covers the best things to do in Ericeira, how to get there from Lisbon, where to eat, which beaches and viewpoints to prioritize, and how to turn it into a full day trip without rushing.

Is Ericeira, Portugal Worth Visiting?

Yes. Ericeira is worth visiting for its Atlantic scenery, white-and-blue old town, beaches, surf culture, seafood, and slower pace.

It is officially recognized as part of a World Surfing Reserve, but you do not need to surf to enjoy it. I do not visit for the waves. I visit because the town is beautiful, walkable in sections, filled with places to stop for food and drinks, and unusually easy to enjoy with children.

Ericeira feels like a real coastal town rather than a checklist of attractions.

That is also what makes it different from Sintra. Sintra is the better choice if your priority is palaces, castles, and history. Ericeira is better when you want fresh air, beaches, food, and a relaxed day that still feels special.

Ericeira at a Glance

  • Best for: beaches, coastal views, surfing, seafood, relaxed family days, and a Lisbon day trip
  • Distance from Lisbon: about 40 kilometers
  • Typical drive: roughly 35–50 minutes depending on your starting point and traffic
  • Public transport: direct Carris Metropolitana buses operate between Lisbon’s Campo Grande area and Ericeira
  • Best way to explore: car or rideshare for maximum flexibility; walking works well within the town center
  • How long to spend: one full day, although an overnight stay makes the pace even easier

Why Ericeira Feels So Different From Lisbon

Ericeira is a traditional fishing town that became internationally known for surfing. The town still has working fishing traditions, but now its narrow streets also hold cafés, restaurants, surf shops, boutiques, and places designed for visitors who want to slow down.

The Atlantic is present almost everywhere. One street ends at a viewpoint. Another opens onto a beach. A playground sits beside the coast, and restaurants turn the sea into part of the meal.

The best part of Ericeira is not one landmark. It is the way the entire day feels.

For my family, that means the children can run and play while I sit nearby with a drink and look at the water. We can walk without forcing a strict schedule, stop for food when we are ready, and end the day with a sunset rather than another ticketed attraction.

Best Things to Do in Ericeira, Portugal

Walk Through Ericeira’s Old Town

Start in the compact center, where the white buildings, blue trim, patterned pavement, and small squares immediately establish the town’s character.

You do not need a rigid walking route. Wander toward the water, pass the shops and cafés, and let the streets lead you toward Praia dos Pescadores. This part of the day is best when you leave room to stop spontaneously.

See Praia dos Pescadores

Praia dos Pescadores sits directly below the town center beside the fishing port. Its protected position makes it calmer than some of the more exposed beaches along the coast.

Even if you do not plan to swim, it is an easy place to understand Ericeira’s relationship with the sea. Fishing boats, the harbor wall, the beach, and the old town all sit together in one view.

Let the Kids Play at Parque de Santa Marta

Parque de Santa Marta is one of the places that makes Ericeira work so well for families. The municipal park includes a children’s play area, green space, an outdoor amphitheater facing the sea, a skating rink, mini golf, tennis, padel, and fitness equipment.

This is not a playground you tolerate for the children. It is a stop adults can enjoy too because the setting is so beautiful.

Build time into the itinerary for your children to play instead of treating it as a five-minute stop.

Visit Parque Urbano de São Sebastião

On the northern side of town, Parque Urbano de São Sebastião offers another coastal stop near the chapel and beach of the same name.

This is part of the Ericeira experience I return to: children playing, adults sitting with a drink, and the ocean always in view. A kiosk or terrace nearby can make this an especially good late-afternoon stop, although seasonal hours can change.

Watch the Surfers at Ribeira d’Ilhas

Ribeira d’Ilhas is one of Ericeira’s best-known surf beaches and an important stop within the World Surfing Reserve. The bay and cliffside viewing areas make it worth seeing even if nobody in your group plans to surf.

If you want to try surfing, book a lesson with an instructor who can choose conditions appropriate for your level. Ericeira’s reputation is deserved, but not every break is beginner-friendly on every day.

Spend Time at Foz do Lizandro

Foz do Lizandro lies south of town where the river meets the Atlantic. The broad sand, river-mouth scenery, facilities, and surf schools make it one of the most family-friendly beach choices near Ericeira.

It is also a good addition if you have a car and want more beach time than the central town beaches provide.

Follow the Coast for Viewpoints and Sunset

Some of Ericeira’s best views appear between the named attractions. Walk the coastal paths where practical, stop at cliffside viewpoints, and leave time for sunset.

One of my favorite Ericeira memories is sitting at the tables near a coastal playground after the kiosk had closed. We bought a bottle of wine elsewhere, sat down, and watched the day end over the Atlantic.

It was simple and completely perfect.

Best Beaches in Ericeira

Ericeira does not have one single “best” beach. The right choice depends on whether you want a central stop, calmer family conditions, or surf scenery.

Praia dos Pescadores is the easiest beach to combine with the old town. It is central, protected by the harbor, and convenient for a short visit.

Praia do Sul is close to town and works well with the southern viewpoints and Vila Galé area.

Foz do Lizandro is a good choice for families who want more sand, space, and beach facilities.

Ribeira d’Ilhas is the essential surf-culture stop. Go to watch the waves, see the bay from above, or take a lesson with a qualified instructor.

São Sebastião combines a northern beach with the chapel, park, and coastal views nearby.

Always assess the ocean conditions when you arrive. The Atlantic can be powerful, and a beach that looks calm in photographs may feel very different on the day of your visit.

Ericeira With Kids

I would not hesitate to recommend Ericeira with children. In fact, almost every visit I have made has been with mine.

The two coastal parks give families built-in breaks. The children can move freely instead of being asked to walk through another museum or wait in another line. Beaches and open spaces provide natural entertainment, and family-friendly restaurants and hotels make it possible to stay longer.

My practical family strategy is to alternate adult and child priorities:

  1. Start with a viewpoint or walk.
  2. Stop at a playground and let the children take their time.
  3. Eat somewhere good rather than defaulting to a child-focused venue.
  4. Add a beach or another short walk.
  5. Finish with sunset near open space.

Ericeira works because the family day does not have to feel like a compromise.

Where to Eat in Ericeira

Costa Fria

Costa Fria is my strongest Ericeira restaurant recommendation and one of the places I would plan the day around.

I have returned multiple times. I always order the enormous grilled pão with whipped salmon roe that the restaurant recommended to me on my first visit.

It was not something I would automatically have chosen, but it became the combination I want every time I go back.

The restaurant describes its food as fresh coastal products shaped by creative technique, which fits the experience. This is not simply a convenient meal near the beach. It is one of the reasons I return to Ericeira.

Other Places to Eat

Ericeira has many seafood restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and casual places in the center and along the coast. Choose based on the route you are already taking instead of crossing town only because a restaurant appeared on a generic “best of” list.

For an oceanfront option, Jangada at You and the Sea offers a relaxed setting and regional ingredients. If you are exploring the northern coast or Ribeira d’Ilhas, a beach bar can also be the better practical choice for drinks and a light meal.

Best Ericeira Tours and Experiences

A Private Ericeira and Mafra Day Trip

If you do not want to manage transportation, a private coastal tour from Lisbon can combine Ericeira with Mafra Palace, Azenhas do Mar, or other scenic stops.

This private Ericeira, Azenhas do Mar and Mafra Palace day trip combines coastal scenery with palace history and hotel pickup. It is a broader sightseeing day rather than the unhurried, Ericeira-only itinerary below; check the current schedule before booking.

An Ericeira Surf Lesson

Turn your beach day into time on the water with this small-group surf experience. Equipment is included and the instructor selects a spot suited to your level and the conditions.

Participants must be at least 12, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian booked into the same lesson.

How to Get From Lisbon to Ericeira

By Car

Driving is the easiest option if you want to visit multiple beaches, both playground areas, and a restaurant without organizing the day around a bus timetable.

Ericeira is roughly 40 kilometers from Lisbon. The drive often takes about 35–50 minutes, but Lisbon traffic can change that significantly.

For a flexible day with stops along the coast, compare rental cars for your Lisbon trip and choose the pickup location and vehicle that suit your plans.

By Uber or Bolt

I have taken rideshare services between Lisbon and Ericeira several times. My rides have often been around €30–€40 each way, but that is personal experience rather than a fixed fare.

Check the live price in the app before committing, especially for the return journey. Demand, traffic, pickup point, and time of day can all change the cost.

By Bus

Public transportation does exist. Carris Metropolitana operates routes between Lisbon’s Campo Grande area and Ericeira, including direct services such as line 2740.

Check the official trip planner on the day you travel because schedules vary by weekday, weekend, school period, holiday period, and season.

The bus is the budget-friendly option, but a car or rideshare provides more freedom if you want to move between central Ericeira, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Foz do Lizandro, and specific restaurants.

The Perfect One-Day Ericeira Itinerary

Morning: Old Town, Praia dos Pescadores, and Santa Marta

Arrive in the morning and begin in the old town. Walk toward Praia dos Pescadores, see the harbor, and explore the streets without rushing.

Continue toward Parque de Santa Marta. Let children use the playground while adults enjoy the view, then take advantage of the coastal setting for another walk.

Lunch: Costa Fria

Make Costa Fria the anchor meal rather than squeezing it in as an afterthought. Order based on your tastes, but I would return for the grilled bread and salmon combination alone.

Afternoon: Choose a Beach or Surf Stop

For families and a gentler beach setting, go south toward Foz do Lizandro.

For surfing, dramatic scenery, or a lesson, go north toward Ribeira d’Ilhas.

If you prefer to remain close to town, explore São Sebastião and the northern coastal area instead.

Evening: Playground, Drink, and Sunset

End near Parque Urbano de São Sebastião or another west-facing coastal stop. Give yourself enough time to sit down rather than arriving at sunset and immediately leaving.

This slow ending is the part of the day that best captures why I love Ericeira.

Ericeira vs. Cascais vs. Sintra

Choose Ericeira for a relaxed beach-town day, coastal playgrounds, surf culture, excellent food, and fewer of the big-ticket sightseeing pressures.

Choose Cascais for an easier rail connection, polished waterfront areas, shopping, beaches, and a lively resort-town atmosphere.

Choose Sintra for palaces, gardens, castles, and history. Prepare for crowds, hills, transportation logistics, and timed tickets.

I personally choose Ericeira most often. I have not visited during August, when coastal crowds are likely to be heavier, but across the rest of the year it has repeatedly delivered the relaxed family day I want.

Where to Stay in Ericeira

Immerso

For a slower coastal stay, Immerso places the emphasis on a retreat rather than being in the middle of the old town. Choose it when hotel time matters as much as sightseeing, and plan transportation for exploring Ericeira.

You and the Sea

You and the Sea is the option to consider when you want the space and practicality of an apartment with hotel services. It makes particular sense for families who want room to spread out instead of fitting everything into a standard hotel room.

Vila Galé Ericeira

Vila Galé Ericeira suits travelers who want the Atlantic setting and convenient access to the center. Compare the room categories carefully if a sea view is important to your stay.

Practical Ericeira FAQ

Can you visit Ericeira as a day trip from Lisbon?

Yes. Ericeira is about 40 kilometers from Lisbon and works very well as a full-day trip by car, rideshare, bus, or guided tour.

Do you need a car in Ericeira?

You do not need a car to enjoy the old town and central beaches. A car is helpful if you want to visit Foz do Lizandro, Ribeira d’Ilhas, multiple viewpoints, and specific restaurants in one day.

Is Ericeira good for non-surfers?

Absolutely. I visit for the views, food, playgrounds, walking, beaches, and atmosphere. Surfing is part of Ericeira’s identity, not a requirement for enjoying it.

Is Ericeira good for families?

Yes. The coastal parks, beaches, open spaces, family accommodations, and relaxed pacing make it one of my favorite easy outings with children.

How many days do you need in Ericeira?

One day is enough for the old town, a park, one beach or surf stop, a memorable meal, and sunset. Stay one or two nights if you want multiple beaches, surf lessons, spa time, or a slower pace.

Plan the Rest of Your Lisbon Trip

If Ericeira is your day outside the city, use my 3-day Lisbon itinerary to fit it around Lisbon’s neighborhoods, waterfront and a slower family day. My guide to where to stay in Lisbon helps you choose a base that makes those plans easier.

Still choosing between the coast and the palaces? Compare my favorite day trips from Lisbon before committing. Back in the city, pair your sightseeing with one of these Lisbon restaurants with a view and leave room for the Lisbon attractions and experiences that interest you most.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Ericeira, Portugal

Ericeira is one of the easiest places near Lisbon to build a day around what actually feels good: ocean air, beautiful walks, children playing, excellent food, and enough space to slow down.

It does not require the logistical planning of Sintra or the same polished resort energy as Cascais. It has its own rhythm, and that is exactly why I keep returning.

If you have time for one less-obvious coastal day trip from Lisbon, make it Ericeira.

Portugal Travel Planning Guide

🚑 Should I buy travel insurance for Portugal?
It is strongly recommended. Non residents do not automatically receive free public healthcare, although private healthcare is available. Travel insurance covers emergencies, delays, and medical visits. If you require a Schengen visa, insurance is mandatory. Visitors Coverage is a highly trusted and recommended choice.

💳 Will my debit card or credit card work in Portugal, and do I need cash?

Most major credit and debit cards work in Portugal, including Visa, Mastercard, and many travel cards from US and UK banks. Some smaller cafés, markets, and rural spots still prefer cash, so carry a little on hand. To avoid foreign transaction fees, cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve are excellent options. For ATM withdrawals and currency exchange, use a Wise card. Wise usually provides better exchange rates than traditional banks and is widely accepted at Portuguese ATMs and anywhere debit and credit cards are accepted.

📲 Will my phone work in Portugal?
Many major carriers offer roaming plans, but costs vary. For affordable data, purchase a local SIM from Vodafone or MEO or use an eSIM like Airalo. Public wifi exists but is not always reliable, so a local data plan is ideal.

🚙💨 Is it safe to rent a car in Portugal?
Yes. Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore Portugal. Roads are well maintained. Expect toll highways and narrow streets in older villages. Automatic cars are limited, so book early. I recommend using Discover Cars to find the most reputable rental car company. Just filter for the company with the best reviews.

💧 Can you drink tap water in Portugal?
Yes. Tap water is safe throughout Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, and most populated regions. In remote rural areas water systems may vary, so check locally if you are unsure. Many visitors prefer a filtered bottle because the mineral taste can be stronger in some areas, though generally safe.

🏩 Best way to book accommodations in Portugal
I use Booking.com and Hotels.com for hotels. Mostly Hotels.com because I love a rewards program! For unforgettable, luxury stays, I highly recommend Plum Guide for your stay. VRBO also works incredibly well for luxury stays, especially for families.

✈️ Best site to search for flights to Portugal
Skyscanner and Google Flights provide reliable fare tracking for Lisbon, Porto, and Faro. Prices vary significantly by season, with summer being the highest.

🎫 Do I need a visa for Portugal?
US, UK, and most EU passport holders do not need a visa for short tourist stays within the 90-day Schengen limit. Stays longer than 90 days require a visa arranged before arrival.
