Flying business class with TAP Portugal has yielded consistently pleasant experiences for me. I’ve flown Business Class with TAP from Boston to Lisbon 4 times, and from Newark to Lisbon once.
I’ve also flown business class quite a lot for work (Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Delta) and on my own personal vacations (Lufthansa, Air France, United), so I have a good basis for my opinions about TAP.
If you’re curious about my experiences, and what yours will likely be, stick around—I’ll walk you through everything you need to know.
Overview of TAP Portugal Business Class
TAP Air Portugal’s business class is offers travelers a superior flying experience, but the true luxury is on the plane. Some airlines begin the business class experience from the moment you leave your home, until you reached your destination outside of the destination airport.
For example, Emirates will send you a complimentary chauffer service from your home to the Airport.
Some airlines have amazing arrival lounges for you to relax and freshen up before you leave the airport. Unfortunately, TAP doesn’t have those bells and whistles.
But, TAP Portugal has what I need in a business class–a comfortable and private lounge, layflat seats with some privacy, good food, and friendly service. To me, that is luxury.
A Peek at TAP Air Portugal
TAP Air Portugal isn’t just another European airline; it’s the national carrier of Portugal and has been in operation since 1945. Over the years, it has built a strong name for itself by embracing innovation and frequently updating its fleet.
TAP is particularly popular for connecting North America, Europe, and South America, with Lisbon serving as its central hub.
I came from Boston, so TAP and Delta were the only 2 choices for direct flights between Boston and Lisbon. I much preferred TAP’s business class layout, and prices.
The prices were always significantly better than Delta’s.
Prioritizing Convenience for TAP Business Class Passengers
Although the bells and whistles of business class are not there for the entire journey, TAP Portugal understands that time is valuable, especially for business class passengers.
Priority boarding, fast-track security, and priority baggage handling are excellent features and are always consistently excellent. I’ve been in business class flights where the priority tag on your bag was simply a suggestion.

Priority boarding departing Lisbon can sometimes be tricky if you don’t time it right. We once waited too long in the lounge to get to the gate. Once we arrived, priority boarding had started.
In Lisbon, you board onto a bus that then takes you to the plane. There is a business class bus and an economy class bus. There is also a bus for those that need extra assistance.
We once missed it and had to wait in line for the economy bus. I know…first world problems.
However, I just wanted to share. If this is your first time flying from Lisbon, just know that you don’t always board from the jet bridge to the plane. Most times, you are getting on a bus.
TAP Business Class Lounges
Boston Logan Airport
In the Boston airport, the Business class lounge for TAP is shared with the star alliance partners. The lounge is really just ok. They have snacks and light beverage options, but the food on the plane is much better.

It is also a bit old and run down, but again, it offers cleaner bathrooms than the rest of the airport, and a quiet place to recharge and relax.
The Lounge also serves Aer Lingus Business Class passengers and is part of the Priority Pass Network. For a more in-depth look at this lounge, check out this article by Miles for Places.
Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport
In the Lisbon airport, TAP Air Portugal has a fabulous new lounge after passport control.

The lounge before passport control is far too busy and far from your gate. Go to the new one instead. The food offerings are excellent and the Wi-Fi is strong.
Check out the food below in this video. I was moving a little too fast, but you will see they have great options.
It is spacious and clean and offers several seating options. It’s a calm place to unwind or catch up on work before boarding your flight.

This lounge felt much more luxurious than the lounge in the US.
Newark Airport
At Newark airport, the business class lounge is newer and is very spacious and well equipped. There is a full service bar and great selection of healthy food, as well as comfort food.

The lounge is shared with Lufthansa and it is a way better than the lounge in Boston. The food options were amazing and there were options for all dietary needs. There is also a full bar and coffee station.
The only downside is that the lounge is only open from 2:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., seven days a week. Our flight was 11:30, so we did have much time to enjoy the lounge.

TAP Portugal Business Class Seats
The seating in TAP Portugal’s business class is tailored to suit different passenger preferences. The A321neoLR offers a 2-2 configuration for odd-numbered rows and and 1-1 configuration for even-numbered rows. I flew on the A321neoLR on my Boston and Newark round trip flights to Lisbon.
That means that if you want direct aisle access, you will need to snag those seats available where you don’t have a neighbor. These are called throne seats.
Positioned by themselves with additional personal space, throne seats offer the quiet retreat you might need after a busy schedule.

If you are traveling with a partner, then not having a throne seat is not a huge issue. It is, however, challenging to get out of window seats if your neighbors are sleeping or have their seats reclined.
I flew with my brother and had to straddle over him to get to the bathroom. It was unpleasant for both of us because I woke him up mid-straddle!
Just a note, if you are flying alone and can’t get that single seat, consider choosing the seat with direct aisle access and not the window seat.
One of the highlights is the throne seat, available on select aircraft. These seats are perfect for solo travelers who prioritize privacy.
The seats are fully equipped, and fully lie flat. With the push of a button, your seat transforms into a fully flat bed, allowing you to rest comfortably—even at 35,000 feet. You are also given a cozy blanket and pillow.

The seat has power outlets, USB outlets, and noise cancelling headphones. There is also plenty of storage space in the seat itself, as well as a spacious footwell.
In-Flight Entertainment System
TAP Air Portugal’s business class offers a top-notch entertainment system that includes a high-definition seatback screen. The library is packed with movies (including new releases), TV shows, music, and even games.

To complement the system, they provide noise-cancelling headphones, which help you fully immerse yourself in whatever you’re watching or listening to.
TAP also has free Wi-Fi available on the flight. It includes messaging apps only, but still a nice option. They also offer other data tiers wifi that would allow you to full internet access as well for a certain cost.
Meal Service: A Complete Gastronomic Experience
One of my favorite moments when flying business class is the welcome drink or the pre-departure drink. It’s a fun way to welcome passengers.
TAP doesn’t have this offering on Boston or Newark flights. You do, however, have a water bottle in your seat.
You won’t have to wait long after takeoff for meal service to start. TAP refers to their meal service as “a complete gastronomic experience and a varied drinks menu.“

Business class meals are typically always a treat, for me. The entire experience is like going to a fine dining restaurant. The meal service. TAP Portugal takes its dining options seriously, blending sophistication with a warm nod to Portuguese culture.
The menu options are consistently great as well as their wine selection. There are typically 2-3 meal options offering a main course.

TAP Portugal’s business class menu is all about variety and quality. They’ve curated options to satisfy a range of tastes while highlighting Portuguese culinary traditions.
And if you’ve got dietary needs, you can pre-select meals, which is great feature.
Beyond the main dishes, the offering extends to include a well-crafted drinks menu. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic Portuguese wine or a refreshing cocktail, there’s always something worth sipping on.
The wine list, in particular, stands out, showcasing regional favorites like Vinho Verde and Douro reds.
And let’s not forget dessert! Pair it with an espresso or a glass of port wine for the perfect end to your meal.
Amenity Kit: One of My Favorite Things
TAP Portugal provides a beautifully curated amenity kit for business class passengers. Inside, you’ll find a pretty sleep mask, lip balm, and hand cream.
The kit also includes toothbrushes, toothpaste, earplugs, and socks. What’s great is that these items aren’t just functional—they’re often from well-known brands, adding a touch of luxury.
Customer Service and Crew Excellence
One thing you’ll notice right away is the crew’s warm and approachable style. Though professional, they don’t feel stiff or overly formal. Instead, they strike the perfect balance—helpful without being overbearing.
From the moment you board, their goal is clearly to make you feel at home in the skies.
Asking for something mid-flight? It never feels like an inconvenience.
TAP Portugal’s business class isn’t just about premium seats or elevated dining—it’s about how you’re treated along the way. I think we can all agree that unfriendly staff can completely ruin your experience, whether business class or economy.
There is nothing worst than rude and unhelpful crew members. I have not experienced this on TAP at all.
In fact, for my 40th birthday my entire family flew the business class cabin from Boston to Lisbon. This included, at the time, my 3 year old and 10 month old.
The crew went above and beyond to help me (a nervous, nursing mom) to juggle my little ones.
My then 3 year old had a tantrum when landing and refused to wear his seatbelt. Instead of scolding me because I couldn’t control him, THEY GOT HIM A COLORING BOOK! Those types of helpful experiences are what makes for outstanding customer service and an unforgettable experience.
From small gestures to thoughtful responses, the service is what sticks with you long after you’ve landed.
TAP Website and Booking Process
My only critique about TAP is their website and booking process. Their website is very glitchy. When booking several tickets, I was often timed out and had to input passport info for several people multiple times.
I had to call the airline a few times, and even though there was always confusion, the customer service agents were generally polite and tried to be as helpful as they could.
If you have to change your flight, depending on the type of ticket you have, you can easily change it online, which is a positive. But, I think the website is due for an update.
Pricing and Value
When it comes to business class seats, pricing can vary significantly. TAP Air Portugal often stands out for offering more competitive rates than airlines like Delta, Air France or British Airways.
For instance, a transatlantic flight in business class with TAP can cost hundreds (sometimes even thousands) of dollars less than similar routes with its competitors. This makes it an attractive option for those looking to enjoy a premium experience without breaking the bank.
I never used points for my trips, I always paid out of pocket or paid for an upgrade after purchasing an economy ticket. You are able to bid for an upgrade using the app SeatBoost.
Despite being more affordable, you’re still getting perks like lie-flat seats, excellent in-flight dining, and attentive service.
Yes, some airlines may have flashier amenities or lounges, but TAP balances cost and quality well.
For budget-conscious business travelers or those flying frequently, this balance makes a big difference. Why pay more when you can get a great experience for less? You still arrive relaxed, well-fed, and rested, just like you would with pricier airlines.
Final Thoughts
When it comes to business class travel, TAP Portugal has a solid business class product that hits a sweet spot between luxury and value.
From the lie-flat seats and carefully curated meals to the warmness of the crew, flying business class with TAP is about more than just reaching your destination—it’s about enjoying the journey.
And let’s be real, who doesn’t want an upgrade in comfort when flying across continents?
Still wondering if it’s worth it? Imagine sipping Portuguese wine while stretched out in a lie-flat seat, or enjoying a gourmet meal at 35,000 feet—it’s small luxuries like these that make the choice clear. Business class is always worth it.

Portugal Travel Planning Guide
🚑 Should I buy travel insurance for Portugal?
It is strongly recommended. Non residents do not automatically receive free public healthcare, although private healthcare is available. Travel insurance covers emergencies, delays, and medical visits. If you require a Schengen visa, insurance is mandatory. Visitors Coverage is a highly trusted and recommended choice.
💳 Will my debit card or credit card work in Portugal, and do I need cash?
Most major credit and debit cards work in Portugal, including Visa, Mastercard, and many travel cards from US and UK banks. Some smaller cafés, markets, and rural spots still prefer cash, so carry a little on hand. To avoid foreign transaction fees, cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve are excellent options. For ATM withdrawals and currency exchange, use a Wise card. Wise usually provides better exchange rates than traditional banks and is widely accepted at Portuguese ATMs and anywhere debit and credit cards are accepted.
📲 Will my phone work in Portugal?
Many major carriers offer roaming plans, but costs vary. For affordable data, purchase a local SIM from Vodafone or MEO or use an eSIM like Airalo. Public wifi exists but is not always reliable, so a local data plan is ideal.
🚙💨 Is it safe to rent a car in Portugal?
Yes. Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore Portugal. Roads are well maintained. Expect toll highways and narrow streets in older villages. Automatic cars are limited, so book early. I recommend using Discover Cars to find the most reputable rental car company. Just filter for the company with the best reviews.
💧 Can you drink tap water in Portugal?
Yes. Tap water is safe throughout Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, and most populated regions. In remote rural areas water systems may vary, so check locally if you are unsure. Many visitors prefer a filtered bottle because the mineral taste can be stronger in some areas, though generally safe.
🏩 Best way to book accommodations in Portugal
I use Booking.com and Agoda for hotels. For unforgettable, luxury stays, I highly recommend Plum Guide for your stay. VRBO also works incredibly well.
✈️ Best site to search for flights to Portugal
Skyscanner and Google Flights provide reliable fare tracking for Lisbon, Porto, and Faro. Prices vary significantly by season, with summer being the highest.
🎫 Do I need a visa for Portugal?
US, UK, and most EU passport holders do not need a visa for short tourist stays within the 90-day Schengen limit. Stays longer than 90 days require a visa arranged before arrival.
